On behalf of the Royal Dutch Cycling Union (KNWU) BMX Holland organized, in cooperation with the city of Rotterdam the UCI BMX World Championships in ‘Sportpaleis Ahoy Rotterdam’, 23 to 27 July 2014. These BMX Worlds attracted 32.000 visitors to Ahoy Rotterdam. 60% of the 32.000 visitors came from abroad, 4% from Rotterdam and 36% from the Netherlands. The total additional spending by visitors of these BMX Worlds adds up to € 2.6 million. The additional organizational spending was € 1.1 million. This brings the total amount of additional spending by visitors and organization to € 3.700.000.

This becomes clear after a research of the economic impact, done by Research agency ‘Meerwaarde’ and ‘Hogeschool Rotterdam’. Research like this has been done after Tour de France in 2010 (spin off 33 million). The results shows that organizing of international sports events give an extra boost to the economy.

Other results of this research to the economic impact of the BMX Worlds are:

• The participation of additional visitors is 85%.

• Average spending from Dutch: 48,71 euros per person.• Average spending from foreigners: 60,00 euros per person.

• Approximately 27,000 overnight stays, of which 14,200 in a hotel.

• Satisfaction rating visitors 8.2.

• Satisfaction rating participants 9.0.

From an economic point of view these BMX Worlds have been really successful. There are two elements that have contributed to this result: first, the combination of the BMX World Championships with challenge riders (2,600 participants) and secondly offering relatively inexpensive accomodation options like a camp site for the participants. Organizing a camp site fits well with the needs of many participants and their entourage.

Organizing international sports events is in line with the strategic objectives of Rotterdam, a target to position itself as one of the most appealing sports cities in Europe. Another important objective in organizing sports events is creating economic impact. Economic impact means the extra spending that have flowed into the Rotterdam economy thanks to the 2014 event.
