It was a triumph of the underdogs at the Junior Men and Women's BMX finals at the Tampines BikePark today as two South American athletes- David Oqeundo of Columbia and Mayara Perez of Brazil- pipped hot favourites to emerge champions.

David had entered the finals after finishing sixth in the semis, behind favorites Twan van Gendt of the Netherlands and Kristers Taims of Latvia. But the Columbian came from behind to steal a surprise victory from Twan. Twan had qualified in first place at the semis, but had to settle for second in today's finals.

In third place was Denmark's Niklas Laustsen, who finished third in both the semis and the finals. "He was a smarter rider," said Niklas, when asked about David's surprise win.

Similarly, Brazil's Mayara went into the finals after finishing fifth in the semis, and was hardly considered among the top contenders for the gold. Though she started off behind her competitors, Mayara more than caught up against favourites Kirsten Dellar from Australia, Maartje Hereijgers from the Netherlands and Teagan O’Keeffee of South Africa.

Throughout the race, Kristen and Mayara fought to take the lead but Mayara managed to pull ahead of Kristen just before the finish line.

Just as exciting as the races themselves were the festivities in the stands. YOG mascots Lyo and Merly came out during breaks to keep the spectators entertained, while Jammerz Arena from Republic Polytechnic also whipped the crowd into a frenzy with her live rock music during the race. Royalty also graced the stands with Prince Albert II of Monaco spotted amongst the crowd.

For David and Mayara's fans who were clearly outnumbered by those from the Netherlands and Denmark, their unexpected wins could only have been all the more sweeter.
