Sportcity is a cluster of sports venues in east Manchester, housing facilities such as the Manchester Regional Arena ( a track & field venue), the City of Manchester Stadium (home to the Manchester City Football Club), and the Manchester Velodrome, among others. Now, BMX Racing will take its place along side the other sports with a permanent, indoor facility which promises to be the best of its kind (permanent, indoors), anywhere in the world.

When completed in April 2011, The £19.5m (USD$31.9 Million) “Sportcity BMX arena” will be a 110,000 sq. ft. facility and will provide seating for 2,000 spectators. A connector building will link it to the Manchester Velodrome. Sportcity will also, at that time, become the Headquarters to the British Cycling Federation, with improved training facilities for British Cycling athletes. BCF will then be one of the largest employers in east Manchester, with over 200 employees.

The Sportcity BMX venue will be directly responsible for 50 new jobs in the area, with 12 full-timers being charged with the BMX arena’s operation.

Stay tuned to BMXNEWS.COM for construction updates, maybe a spy photo or two as construction unfolds, and perhaps even a live report from the opening ceremony.
